The City of Bay City is seeking a progressive Fire Chief to oversee a full time department with approximately 50 career fire suppression personnel and four fire stations/engine companies.  The City is actively exploring staffing options for its Fire Department and preference will be given to strong leaders who can embrace change and who have experience supervising “paid on-call” fire suppression operations and personnel.  Annual Salary range is $55,000 - $80,000

The successful candidate will possess a Baccalaureate Degree in fire sciences, public administration or other closely related curriculums.  Must possess extensive and progressively responsible experience in fire administration, fire prevention and suppression or equivalent education and experience; as well as the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Extensive knowledge of the theories, principles and practices involved in modern fire administration, prevention, and suppression.

Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods involved in instructing and training members of a fire fighting service.

Knowledge and skills in the use of various types of fire fighting apparatus and equipment and of their general operation and maintenance.

Extensive knowledge of the modern principles of municipal fire department administration.

Ability to lead and motivate fire suppression personnel.  Organize, plan, direct and supervise the work of a large number of subordinate personnel involved in providing fire prevention and suppression services.

The ability to develop and manage a budget.

Strong verbal and writing skills.  Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports of departmental activities, as well as departmental efficiency and effectiveness.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with union leaders, city officials, subordinates, civic leaders and the public.

Bay City, Michigan has a population of approximately 36,000 and is located near the Saginaw Bay at the juncture of two major freeways, U.S. 10 and 1-75. The city is a major recreation and entertainment center, approximately 120 miles north of Detroit.
