Bay City Electric Light and Power Day

Saturday, October 9, 2021

BAY CITY, MI – Bay City Electric Light and Power is celebrating Public Power Week, October 3-9, 2021, along with more than 2,000 other community-powered electric utilities. Collectively these not-for-profit utilities provide electricity to 49 million Americans. Bay City Electric Light and Power (BCELP) supplies energy to more than 21,000 customers in our service area which extends beyond the city limits to Bangor, Frankenlust, Hampton, Monitor and Portsmouth townships.

“This year, we especially celebrate the employees of Bay City Electric Light and Power – the people behind public power,” said BCELP Director, Adam Webster. “They work tirelessly to keep our community up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” BCELP’s team includes everyone from front-line workers to administrative staff. “Our dedicated staff members work in many divisions but pull together with a common goal; keeping Bay City powered,” Webster said.

BCELP invites community members to come join us to celebrate Public Power Day on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at our Service Center located at 900 South Water Street.

Activities include:

  • Pole climbing exhibition
  • Power plant tour
  • Bucket truck rides
  • Safety demonstrations
  • Energy efficiency demonstrations
  • Game and prizes
  • Many other family-friendly activities

BCELP has been a staple in the community since 1868 when it was known as the Bay City Gas Light Company. In 2020, the American Public Power Association (APPA) recognized BCELP as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) Diamond designee. It is the highest honor from the APPA and is awarded to utilities that demonstrate high proficiency in reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement.

Public Power Week is an annual national observance coordinated by the American Public Power Association. The American Public Power Association is the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 towns and cities nationwide. The Association represents public power before the federal government to protect the interests of the more than 49 million people that public power utilities serve, and the 93,000 people they employ. It advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and operations. Its members strengthen their communities by providing superior service, engaging citizens, and instilling pride in community-owned power. More at www.PublicPower.org.
