Construction to begin on Liberty Bridge

BAY CITY, MICH. – Bay City Bridge Partners (BCBP) has provided notice that their specialty contractor, Granite-Kraemer Joint Venture (GKJV), will begin to assemble at the Liberty Bridge work site on Nov. 29, 2021.

While GKJV goes through the process of finalizing preliminary work, visible activity and closures will not be apparent. Traffic control measures are currently set to begin on Dec. 13, 2021. Traffic control measures will include traffic being reduced to one lane in each direction and traffic will shift dependent on whether work is being completed on the northern or southern lanes. Please be prepared for potential traffic delays and take care when driving through construction areas. Work will continue into the new year and pertinent updates will be posted to the City’s website as they become available.

The following is a schedule of what will be happening soon on the Liberty Bridge. BCBP will revitalize this bridge first, ahead of construction of the new Independence Bridge.

  • Nov. 29, 2021 – contractor begins behind-the-scenes work and site set up on Liberty Bridge
  • Dec. 13, 2021 – traffic shifts to one side of Liberty Bridge and is reduced to one-lane in each direction
  • January 2022 – major work begins on the electrical and mechanical components
