Captain Rodrick Schanck has been with the Bay City Department of Public Safety (BCDPS) since 2000. He attended Mio AuSable High School and was a 1999 graduate of Saginaw Valley State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. Captain Schanck attended the Kirtland Regional Police Academy.
He began working as a police officer for the Bay City Police Department. Captain Schanck was assigned to the Mid-Michigan Safe Streets Task Force from 2009 to 2013. In 2012, the Department of Public Safety was created, merging the Bay City Police and Fire Departments into one combined Department of Public Safety. Captain Schanck attended the Bay County Fire Academy in 2013 and obtained Firefighter I and II certifications from the State of Michigan. He was promoted to Corporal Accident Investigator in 2017, Sergeant in 2018, Lieutenant in 2020, and most recently to Patrol Operations Division Captain in 2021.
During his career, he was involved in the Field Training Officer program as a trainer and later became a supervisor and coordinator. He was a Meth Lab Responder, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor. He was also assigned to the CIRT tactical team. He also oversaw the institution of the department’s first Canine Unit.
